History of the Area
Belgravia is one of London’s most prestigious and sought after areas to live, situated to the south-west of Buckingham Palace and bounded by Knightsbridge to the north. Much of the area was owned by Richard Grosvenor, 2nd Marquess of Westminster, who started development work in 1820. The majority of the area is still managed by the Grosvenor Estate, which is owned by the Duke of Westminster. Thomas Cubitt (who has a restaurant named after him in Elizabeth Street) was the main contractor. Grand terraces of white stucco fronted houses characterise Belgravia, which is centred around Belgrave Square and Eaton Square. Belgravia has been, and still remains, one of London’s most fashionable residential districts.
